Slicer
Runners and Slicer Hoppers
Last updated 6/10/2006
“I
have a blip on the m-reader.” “Where?” “Two
o-clock, just over the barrels there, behind the crates.” “I
ain’t picking up anything, do you mean the wasted food
crates?” “Can’t
see it anymore, it’s gone now.” “What’s
the setting on that reader?” “Three…” “Too
low, you are probably picking up rats or something.” “Ok
I’ll set it to four…”
Extract
of the conversation between Pvt. Trevis and Sgt. Orrick recovered
from Sgt. Orricks personal comm-recorder after retrieval of their
corpses.

Feared
by the enemy, hated by most, Slicer Runners are amongst
the more controversial autonomous robots delivered by Remtec
Robotics. A Slicer Runner looks like a headless chicken; a
sensor array and four optical units are mounted on the front
allowing a wide range of visual, motion and acoustic detection.
Mounted on the top is a rotor shaft whose end is fitted with
three sets of weighted monofilament wires. When activated, the
control core of the unit seeks out all humanoid targets
not fitted with a friendly transponder. Once within range the
robot spins the rotor and unrolls one monofilament wire. The
rotor thus becomes a deadly propeller capable of slicing off a
human leg at the knee. If one monofilament wire becomes
entangled, it is ejected and another one is unrolled.

“I
ain’t going into them underpasses. Send in the hoppers and
let them take the heat.” Cpl. Projiko –
Cirqual-IV sweep mission.
|
Accidents
with Slicer Runners are not uncommon, given the tendency of the
unit’s friend-or-foe recognition matrix to become
confused in the presence of multiple transponders and
electromagnetic interference. As a result, Slicer Runners are
normally sent in first and deactivated once the ground troops
move in.

“I
hate these things! Every time they activate one you never know if
they are going to recognise your transponder or slice your
kneecaps off!” Pvt. Buti

A Slicer
Hopper is a bigger and meaner version of a Slicer Runner.

Slicer
– this is treated as
a range zero weapon. Place the template directly on top of the
robot. Anyone touched by the template sustains a Pen 0 (Slicer
MK1) or Pen 2 (Slicer MK2) hit. The robot itself is immune to the
effects. The Slicer can also be used in close combat.
A Slicer Runner is a small
target. A Slicer Hopper is a medium sized target.
These robots can only be
programmed with a Seek and Destroy program: the robot
moves towards the nearest enemy infantry unit within LOS and
attacks it getting as close as possible with Charge
actions, engaging in close combat wherever possible.
A robot controller cannot
change the programming on a Slicer Runner/Hopper, it can only
activate the preset program or pilot the robot on remote.
